The Biggest Heart

The Biggest Heart (formerly known as The Biggest Heart of Estonia) is a positive community initiative, which started in Estonia in 2022. Today, the event has become an annual tradition with the main goal of becoming global and bringing together passionate people all around the world. The Biggest Heart began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world was full of social distancing and uncertainty. The idea grew out of the initiative of Joel Juht, the founder of the JJ-Street Dance Company – the street dance school had been making hearts out of people since 2007 during its spring camp at the Virtus sports hall in Jõgeva. Due to the pandemic, the camp had to be cancelled in 2022. However it was decided that the tradition of making hearts had to continue, as it brought joy and gave a sense of care and belonging to people.

What is this event?

The Biggest Heart (formerly known as the Biggest Heart of Estonia) is a community initiative that started in 2022, before Valentine’s day, and has become an inspiring and heartfelt tradition. People gather in different regions on the last Sunday before Valentine’s Day to form hearts with their community. Every year, new people find their way into one of these hearts and the heart with the most participants wins a traveling trophy. The idea is simple: the participants have to gather at the agreed location in the region and form a hand-held human chain resembling a heart with a hollow center, which is then captured in a drone picture. The gallery of hearts and the leaderboard with the winner is then published on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, on the Biggest Heart’s Facebook page and on social media. Over the years, the hearts have been made increasingly creative – in some places a song and dance programmes have been organized, while in some regions umbrellas, flashlights or costumes have been used while forming the hearts. Every community works hard to make their heart as special as possible. In the beginning the initiative was led by JJ-Street’s Dance Company’s coaches and students, now a lot of the coordinators are just active people from the organising region. Anyone can register as a coordinator, whether they are a city or municipality leader, a teacher, a youth worker, a coach, or any other active community leader.
